Paragraphs

A paragraph is a group of sentences that discuss one main idea. The main idea is usually introduced in the first sentence. The other sentences in the paragraph give examples, reasons, facts, etc. to explain and support the main idea. Each sentence in a paragraph should connect logically to the sentences before and after it.

A paragraph is a group of sentences about a single topic. A paragraph can stand alone, or it can be part of a longer passage made of many paragraphs.

However, not just any group of sentences can be a paragraph.

In order to be a paragraph, a group of sentences needs…
  • to have specific formatting
  • to focus on a single topic
  • to be organized
  • to have connected ideas

In this section, you will learn about each of these points in more detail.
