Emperor Justinian Mosaic from San Vitale

Ravenna, Italy

Introduction

The Justinian Mosaic, one of the most important surviving icons of the Byzantine period, suggests how images and icons might be used to communicate power and authority. The image presents Emperor Justinian between members of the clergy on his left and Roman magistrates and soldiers on his right, suggesting his pivotal role in both areas. The image is intentionally spatially ambiguous, creating a scene that could not exist in the material world.
