Chapter 1

Succeeding in a Project-Based Work Experience

Chapter 1 outlines the structure and objectives of CAR 300R, a Project-Based Work Experience designed to simulate a professional work environment through a structured academic course. Students will engage in a real-world project provided by a company sponsor, working collaboratively within a team to solve pressing problems over a 14-week period. The course emphasizes practical experience in organizing, scheduling, and communication, highlighting the importance of over-communicating and challenging oneself to grow professionally. The project also involves various levels of interaction, from student to professional, encouraging students to determine their desired impact and involvement, which directly influences the outcomes of their experience. The chapter encourages students to harness resources effectively, including the use of AI and an extensive experiential learning library, to deliver professional results and prepare for the workforce by embodying leadership qualities and ethical standards.

Welcome to CAR 300R - Project-Based Work Experience. We are excited to have you participating in this course, and we hope that you will gain new skills, experience, and a better understanding of what your work experience will be like once you graduate and are working in your field of study.

You may be wondering what a Project-Based Work Experience is. This course is designed to help students experience a professional project with a real company in a team setting. You will be assigned a team and a company sponsor that will give you a project and/or problem to solve. You will spend the next 14 weeks working with your team, company sponsor, and instructor or TA Coordinator to complete this project. The course will end with each team providing professional results to the sponsor company and honest feedback to their teammates and mentors.

You will have real work problems that may seem scary or intimidating. In the Book of Mormon (1 Nephi: 3-4), the prophet Nephi was asked to go back to Jerusalem as a young man to obtain the brass plates from a wicked man named Laban. Nephi might have been scared and intimidated by this task. He tried several things at first that did not work, then he trusted in the Lord and went forth "not knowing beforehand what he would do." But with the Lord's help, he was successful in an impossibly hard project. You, too, will have access to the Lord's help in your project. Your instructor and TA Coordinator are also here to help you work through the problems and challenges you will face in order to help you succeed. Once you leave school and start your career, there are no answers in the back of the book or the teacher's notes. You will have real work experiences and create new solutions to unique problems or opportunities. Just like Nephi, you will be successful as you work hard, pray, and don't give up.
